February Travel Summary

Month 7

We had come to the end of the South East Asia leg of our trip and it was definitely a great way to finish travelling with John (Jack’s Dad). Then on 14th February we spent a week in Sydney Australia and went up the coast to Newcastle for a work exchange. We were happy to be in Australia and have a bit of normality after 6 months in Asia.

The total costs for the month are below (each):

February 2014
Vietnam – 14 days (£203)
Australia – 14 days (£271)
HCMC to Sydney flight- £194
Total = £668 / £23.86 per day

As you can see we haven’t spent too much in Australia so far. The main reason is that we have stayed with family or free accommodation with Workaway. However, what surprised us the most is that the public transport system is much cheaper than in the UK. For instance we got a Blue Mountains special train ticket from Newcastle to Katoomba (4 hours) which cost a $8 each (£4). Compare this to a 2 hour train journey from London to Dorset to see our parents which costs over £20 one way. So despite hearing and reading that Australia is more expensive than London we were pleasantly surprised.

Plans for March & April
After spending 4-5 weeks in Australia we’ll fly to New Zealand for 3-4 weeks exploring the South Island and then up to Auckland in the North. We have a workaway project confirmed on Waieke island working for a family with a catering business. After New Zealand the plan is to head to North Asia with Toyko in Japan as our first stop on 10th April.

Thanks everyone for all your nice comments.
